fun with microsoft installers

Now this is a really nice one from microsoft. To reproduce:

  1. get linux on a ext2 or 3 partition.
  2. get the ext2/3 windows driver
  3. load your partition into any letter, I used Z and X
  4. download visual studio 2008. (don’t worry you don’t need to install it it will crash before the big download) I used the C3 one.
  5. run said installer, and you get a neat error.

Now my question is, why on earth are they unpacking in other letter other than c:? Even better why they don’t do a check instead of taking the last letter available?? nice way to go really, go microsoft!

Windows XP installation is even worse. I recently had to reinstall Windows XP Professional on my computer (I was playing with VirtualBox and goofed up my existing windows installation, my fault really). Anyway, I found that the Windows installer would not proceed beyond the initial hardware detection unless I formatted and deleted (yes deleted!!) all my ext2, ext3, reiserfs partitions from my hard drive.

Fortunately, I did not need to reinstall Linux, I simply tarred my partitions to external drives and restored them after windows was installed. But I don’t get why the installer should hand simply because I have other filesystems on my hard drive as long as main parition (C:) is big enough (40GB).

@paul, well that has actually happen to me and it isn’t as bad. it all depends on your XP instalation disk, if it’s an OEM disk then what your saying it’s true. Sadly almost all windows disks today are OEM :)
